Here are some tips for saving money on airfare using online discount travel websites.

In a tough economy, people are looking to save money on air travel. What are some of the best ways to get cheap airline discounts and other air travel bargains? There are a tremendous number of websites dedicated to finding inexpensive airfare. Let’s take a look at some of the best, as well as some ideas for other ways to save money on your air travel.

Travel Timely

One of the best ways to save money on airline tickets is to be flexible with your travel dates. There can be hundreds of dollars of difference between one day and the next, so when you are checking rates, put in different dates to see if there is a difference. Traveling mid-week is almost always cheaper than traveling on weekends- even if you just leave mid-week and return on the weekend you can save money. Also, try to book your flight at least 2-3 weeks before flying; this can save hundreds of dollars on a flight.

Know the Web

Spending the time to visit a number of websites will be worth your time when you score the best cheap airfare to your destination. Probably the three biggest discount travel websites are Travelocity.com, Expedia.com and Orbitz.com. They have loyal followings and constantly compete to offer the biggest discounts to their customers. There are also a bunch of smaller, less nationally advertised websites that also offer pretty impressive travel deals. So be sure to check out travelzoo.com, smartertravel.com and ShermansTravel.com to explore additional travel discount options.

Cheapflights.com gets discounts from encouraging customers to purchase airline and hotel tickets at the same time, with discounts on both. Priceline.com offers deep discounts and specials on combination air travel with hotel stays and car rentals as well.

Explore Airlines and Airports

Always check the different individual airline websites for specials, discounts, and memberships you can join to get cheaper flights. Also, check neighboring airport rates- you can save a lot of money flying into, for example, a New Jersey airport instead of a New York airport, often with the same travel time on the ground to your destination.

Whether you are traveling within the United States or internationally, there are steep discounts to be had by making a few small shifts in the way you look for airfare. Choose your travel days of the week well and be flexible, plan ahead, and surf the web to find some of the best deals out there for the cheap flight you are trying to find.

Happy cheap flying!
