Tired of the same old white lights and humdrum ornaments? Here are some ideas to add some real sparkle to your Christmas tree this year.

Red and green balls, old crocheted craft fair ornaments and plastic candy canes are great, but if you’re looking for new décor for your Christmas tree this year, here are some ideas to consider.

Retro Christmas Tree

Go retro this year! The old C-7 bulbs (single, multicolored screw-in bulbs) have now officially become retro, and if you add some silver tinsel and a blinking gold star at the top, you can have the tree of your childhood back again. White lights have been so popular for so many years that they are getting boring. Consider adding some color back to Christmas, break out the old colored glass ball sets from the '60s and '70s and have fun with a retro Christmas theme.

Nature Themed Tree

One nice way to celebrate the holiday season is by creating a nature-themed tree. Pinecones, peacock feathers, faux feathered birds, cranberries strung on fishing line and birdhouse ornaments are just a few ways you can create this simple, pretty tree. Search online auction sites like eBay to quickly collect nature-themed tree décor.

Children’s Tree

Think about dedicating your main Christmas tree or a smaller tabletop tree this year to the children in your life. Ornaments or lights centered around animated characters, fun Hallmark ornaments that light up or play music, blinking colored lights, real candy canes, and popcorn strung by the kids are some simple, cute ways to create a children’s tree. Add ornament hooks to old Christmas crafts or pictures they’ve made to personalize the tree, or visit a paint your own pottery shop and have kids create new hand-painted ornaments for "their" tree.

Mitten Tree

One of the cutest tree themes is a mitten tree. Collect mittens in all colors, patterns and sizes from your own closets, thrift shops and Goodwill stores, or yard sales and simply use yarn and ornament hooks to hang them. A big knitted hat would make a perfect tree topper.

Snow Theme Tree

Snow ornaments, lights and accessories are easy to find and create a pretty, universal Christmas tree. Snowflake ornaments are inexpensive and, in different shapes and sizes can create a uniform look for your tree. “Fake snow” is great for throwing in handfuls onto your tree to create a glittery effect. Mix blue and white bulbs for the lights, and add some silver tinsel for extra bling.

Many other themes can be used for Christmas trees as well. Your favorite sports team or hobby, vintage photos or Christmas themes like gingerbread men, reindeer, angels, Santas, etc would make a gorgeous tree when collected and grouped together. Be creative!
