Denby Pottery Announces Bicentenary PlansDenby's Bi-Centennial Designs Announced
In 2009 Denby Potteries in Derbyshire UK will celebrate 200 years in pottery manufacturing. They announce their plans for celebrating this landmark year.
Look through the kitchen cupboards of most of British households and one thing you will find is a piece of Denby pottery. Many lovers of Denby ware have become avid collectors and will proudly show off collections of the different designs that have been manufactured over the years by this successful Derbyshire company. Bicentennial Year Designs2009 will be the company’s 200th year of manufacturing quality pottery. To commemorate their bicentennial, Denby have announced that they will produce a completely new design of tableware called Pure Green. The design is curvaceous and stylish and yet retains the simplicity that the Denby aficionado appreciates. Each piece will carry the official bicentenary back stamp. Denby has also announced that they will be producing a limited run of “one-cup teapots” which can be used practically and are also ideal for the teapot collector. They will also be manufacturing a new One Pint Mug in the “Craftman’s” style. History of the Denby FactoryDenby Pottery was founded in 1809 by Joseph Bourne, a local potter and entrepreneur. It was the discovery of a particularly good seam of pottery clay at the village of Denby that led him to start a factory there. Denby ware is made from the identical seam of clay to this day. Salt Glazed BottlesInitially the factory produced salt glazed bottles and jars to hold commodities such mineral waters, ginger beer, polish, preserves, medicines and inks. As glass became cheaper it replaced pottery for many of these uses and so Denby turned to producing other items. Over the years Denby have responded to changes in the way we live. Their pottery has evolved to be both practical and beautiful. It is oven proof, freezer proof and dishwasher proof and is still attractive enough to be used on the table. It is rugged and withstands knocks better than most pottery. Art Crystal StudioDenby have recently opened a Glass Studio where high quality pieces of art crystal are produced by their resident glass designer, Paul Barcroft . He has been glass blowing for 23 years to great acclaim. One of his pieces is in the ownership of Prince Charles. Visitor CentreVisitors always receive a warm welcomed at the Factory which opens every day except Christmas and Boxing Day. The visitor centre has many attractions for the day tripper, including a gift shop, the cooking emporium, the garden centre and the museum . One can book a tour of the factory or enjoy decorating a mug or a plate. The full pottery range is on sale along with some great bargains in the “seconds” department. You can also enjoy a meal at Bourne’s restaurant , named in honour of Denby's founder. Scooter FriendlyThe Denby Visitor Centre is very convenient for those who need to get around using a mobility scooter.
