Quick Tips to Organize Your Home

Here are some easy tips to keep your home's clutter under control.

If you're tired of constantly trying to organize your home and feel you get nowhere fast, never fear! There are some simple tricks you can take from the professionals to get going on your organizing goals. Getting rid of clutter doesn't have to be a chore if you work on it gradually. Read on for some great organizing ideas!

  • Do only one room at a time. And even further, if the room you're looking at is insanely messy, do one section of that room at a time. Take it in pie slices. If you flit through the room (or the house, for that matter) picking up stuff here and there then you'll feel like you're not getting anything done. Organize until you can see the deskop, or the kitchen counter, or a small section of the floor, and then move on to the area right next to it. Think baby steps to organization!
  • Make organizing fun! Most people hate the thought of organizing, but try readjusting your mindset. You can look at this as exercise. If you zoom through the house relocating things to their proper home it beats walking mindlessly on the treadmill, right? Blast some music and work your body. You'll be getting two things done at once!
  • Look at each piece of clutter in this way- if your home was destroyed by fire or flood, would you really miss this item? This is an easy exercise the pro's use to help people get rid of things they may think they want. It helps you make real decisions on what's truly important to you.
  • You can also institue a new rule in your home: everytime you bring something new in, something else has to go. Most people don't keep this balance in their home, which is how towering piles of toys and clothes add up over time to create a mess that is overwhelming. Create a "Donation Station" in your home, whether it's in the laundry room, your closet, or in the garage. Make donating a weekly event. If you can work little purges into your normal cleaning routine it will soon become like second-nature instead of a twice-yearly chore that is dreaded.
  • Look at your clutter for what it really is: put-off decisions. For most people, clutter causes anxiety and stress whether you realize it or not. This negatively affects your health! Work on getting that unhealthy clutter out of your house. Not only will it save you emotional stress, but you'll also save time cleaning (by up to 40% according to some studies) as well as cut down on the dust. MAKE DECISIONS and take action! Decluttering is very theraputic once you start to embrace it.
