With the upcoming 4th of July holiday, parades, picnics, and parties mean friends and family will visit. Here's how to spruce up your home for the 4th.

In a tough economy, more and more families will be staying home this year to celebrate America’s Independence Day on the 4th of July. If you have friends and family visiting, it’s always nice to add a patriotic flair to your home for the special occasion.

Your Front Porch

First impressions are so memorable when you visit someone’s home for a special event. If you have hanging baskets or other containers on your porch, simply add small American flags to your plantings to signify your patriotic celebration. Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, Wal-Mart and other American retailers like dollar stores and even grocery stores always stock basic patriotic decorations at this time of year. If you do not have a full size American flag hanging on your porch or near your front door, this one purchase is the best way to create a patriotic welcome at your home.

In Your Kitchen

Red, white and blue flowers are an easy centerpiece for the 4th of July. Hydrangeas are great for the blue, and zinnias or dahlias come in white or red. Roses, daisies, or other flowers growing in your garden (or found at your local florist) can also be used to create a red, white and blue arrangement. You could also choose one patriotic recipe to leave out, such as a simple sheet cake iced with Cool Whip, topped with a ‘flag’ made of blueberry ‘stars’ and strawberry ‘stripes.’ Choose patriotic-themed linens for your tables- even if they are plastic for the outdoor tables!

Patriotic Backyard Décor

Large flag swags, ‘firecracker’ centerpieces, and patriotic-colored candles are great ways to add some 4th of July flair to your yard. You can make a simple small centerpiece like the one in the photo using an empty Ball jar, some white sand, a tea light, some seashells and some read white and blue wired ribbon to tie around the rim of each jar. If you have a number of tables around your backyard, the light from these tea lights will look pretty at night. And don’t forget some sparklers for the kids!

Remember, you don’t have to do it all yourself! There are lots of creative holiday websites out there to help you find more great ideas and retail vendors who specialize in patriotic home décor.

Three cheers for the red, white and blue!
