Moving to a new home is stressful. Properly planning for the worst-case scenario can help avoid costly mistakes. Here are a few moving tips for a smooth move.

Moving to a new location involves detailed planning. Winging it while moving will create problems that are not immediately visible. Mistakes made while moving may not have consequences until months or years later. Here are a few residential moving tips.

Residential Moving

Utilities that are not disconnected properly can result in loss of a substantial deposit or being billed for services never received. Think beyond basic water, gas, electricity, and phone service. Write down any service that you have signed up for that bills every month automatically or sends a paper bill. What items have you ordered to make life comfortable at home? Examples of services are cable, netflix, internet, products on auto ship, and food delivery. Not disconnecting your cable or internet can result in being charged for services that were never used. The family vitamins, water filters, produce delivery, make up, or skin care products may all be ordered on auto ship.

Many of these auto ship arrangements are scheduled to bill your credit card once a month, bimonthly, or quarterly. Not notifying these companies of the updated change of address could result in loss of products. The new residents may not be as honest, and may use the products.Have copies of all installment loans, mortgage, car notes, and anything that requires a monthly payment. Nothing is worse than wanting to pay a bill, but not having the proper account information readily available. Having these bills available will make it easy to prevent having late payments that may adversely affect credit scores.

Renters Insurance

Having your main residence insured is a great precaution to offset unexpected occurrences at home. If an incident occurs before you had a chance to change the address on your renters insurance policy you may encounter problems. Having a house built, requires temporary housing. Renting a home or apartment temporarily during construction of the new home, the location you are renting also needs to be covered by renters insurance. In the event of a break in, where theft, vandalism, fire, or a natural disaster occurs it is important to be protected financially.

Create a list of the phone numbers and websites of all insurance carriers. This list should include health insurance, dental insurance, renters insurance, home owners insurance, flood insurance, wind insurance, and any other important insurance. Keep all insurance cards together in a safe place, easily accessible while traveling.

Important Documents

Think for a moment about which documents are necessary to start your life in a new city. These documents include birth certificates, social security cards, immunization records, an updated resume, medical records, and dental records. Purchase a portable filing system with expandable folders to keep these documents protected during travel.

Having a backup copy of important documents saved digitally onto a computer, online, or on a thumb drive is invaluable in the event your documents are misplaced or destroyed. It is a good idea to scan or take digital pictures of old pictures and store them online. This includes pictures of loved ones that are in frames. Use a digital camera to take a picture of the larger framed portrait. Removing photos from old frames may ruin the photo.

Long Distance Moving

Planning a move properly goes far beyond boxing up the china cabinet properly. It is important to be prepared for anything with long distance moving. Moving across country or to another country is not easy. What would happen if it was impossible to receive the personal belongings on the moving truck immediately? Use these tips to help protect the personal information that is necessary to work, attend school, and receive medical treatment if the unexpected happened.
