With its main hub in downtown Chicago, your dream vacation may be just a train ride away. Amtrak is the largest passenger railroad system in the U.S.

Amtrak is the largest passenger railroad corporation in the United States. The Amtrak rail system covers almost every state in the U.S., and destinations in Canada including Toronto, Niagara Falls, Vancouver and Montreal.

Riding the rail can be much less expensive than flying. For example, a flight from Chicago O'Hare Airport to Lacrosse, Wisconsin averages $200 per way; whereas, the same trip with Amtrak would cost about $30 one way. Although the trip takes much longer on Amtrak, it can be a wonderful time for families or couples to bond. You can play games, enjoy the sites or just spend time talking. It’s also much less stressful because there are no long security check lines or a need to make a mad rush to the next gate.

With its main hub being Union Station in downtown Chicago, many of Amtrak's best deals and offers begin in or are routed through Chicago. This is a great opportunity for anyone living in or even within a short drive of the Chicago area to take an inexpensive vacation. Following are vacation ideas that all involve riding the rail from Chicago to various destinations. All of the train rides are less than five hours one way.

Family Fun and Adventure Travel

The Wisconsin Dells in Wisconsin, and Sandusky of Ohio are two great vacation spots for families. Wisconsin Dells "the Water park capital of the world" is only a three hour train ride from Chicago. In addition to water fun, families can enjoy live entertainment and theater, museums and wildlife parks. Sandusky, located just an hour or so outside of Cleveland, is the home of one of the most popular amusement parks in the United States. Cedar Point, voted the best amusement park for ten consecutive years by Amusement Today, has a combination of thrill rides/roller coasters, kiddie rides and water activities. The city also has several family resorts, water parks, cruise and ferry rides. Sandusky is a five hour or so train ride from Union Station in Chicago.

Romantic Get-Aways

Grand Rapids, Michigan offers two very upscale and romantic hotel options. The Amway Grand an historical hotel in the downtown area, has made major renovations including the addition of a 29-story glass tower. This four star, four diamond hotel houses three formal restaurants (one a five diamond), one sports bar and two coffee/sandwich shops. Additionally the hotel offers a fitness center, hotel shopping and 24 hour room service. The J.W. Marriott, a high-end luxury hotel, is the newest addition to the downtown area. The hotel, which is on the scale of a resort, offers luxurious bedding, thick terry cloth robes, a 24 hour fitness center and various other amenities. It is probably best known for its on-site restaurant, Six-One-Six and it’s cuisine with a "local flair". Grand Rapids is about a four hour train ride from Chicago.

Sports, Nightlife and Gaming

If you enjoy great music, dancing, golf and/or gaming, the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort is the place for you. You can also choose to attend one of their special events such as a Little Richard, Air Supply or Commodores concert. Located just south of Iowa City and north of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Riverside is about a four hour train ride from downtown Chicago.

Race car fans can enjoy events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In May, fans can enjoy the world reknowned Indianapolis 500 competition. Throughout the warm months other activities can also be enjoyed. In late July, the speedway will host the Allstate 400, and in September the inaugural of the Red Bull Grand Prix, a motorcycling event.
