In today's economy many people are choosing to scale down in where and how they live. Some are choosing to move to new homes. This change can be tough.

In order to alleviate some of the stress that comes with moving it is important to stay calm, be organized and accept that some of the stress is inevitable and the best thing to do is take a deep breath and move on to the next task.

Be Organized

Try to be as organized as possible. Keep a notebook of all the things that need to be done and make lists daily of what can be accomplished on that day. When packing label and tape boxes and bins as you are packing them and assign each box a number. In a notebook write down the box number and content so it easier to find specific item as needed. Get an early start with the packing and start with things that will not be used until the move is completed.

The Paperwork

Be sure to go to the post office and get a change of address kit as soon as the move is apparent. Many places will allow customers and clients to change addresses over the internet which makes many things easier. Yet, it is still important to get that change of address kit to insure all the mail follows the move.

Remember to pay bills and keep up with monthly requirements during the move. These things are easy to forget during a chaotic time.

Children

Children often have a hard time with the idea of moving. Many time friends are being left and favorite thing about the present home are being abandoned. Remember to acknowledge and validate kid’s feelings about the move. Try to include them in selecting colors for their room and share with them the positive points of the move. Allow them to pick one doll or stuffed animal or favorite toy as a moving buddy. This moving buddy can go everywhere with the child and help ease the transition a little.

Don't Expect Perfection

Moving is tough. Try to go with the flow and keep a sense of humor about the whole thing. Be organized and on top of things and the move will go more smoothly. Alway remember however, there will be bumps along the way. Deal with each crisis and move on. Don't dwell on what goes wrong, fix it and move on. Doing so will keep a person sane during an insane time.

Record the Move

Try and take photos during the experience. When the move is over it will be fun to look back at the photos of boxes and chaos that was part of the experience. This can also be helpful to kid as they make the adjustment to their new environment. Despite the stress of change, there will be funny moments. Recording these moments can help create positive memories of a rather stressful day in everyone's lives.
