Moving is never fun, and moving to New York can be a huge headache, especially when moving cross country. The difficult part isn't the getting there, or even the preparation - it's everything in between. If done right, the move can be simple and maybe even fun.
Don't assume you'll get a job before you get there.
Some people get lucky and apply for a job, fly out and get hired immediately. Some people get their moving and apartment paid for. But for most people whose address falls outside of the tri-state area, they will not even get a phone call, let alone an interview. It's okay. Research who's hiring, and your first week in the city, hit the pavement and charm the pants off those New York employers. if that doesn't work, there's lots of restaurants to work in.
Don't trust anyone when looking for your apartment.
Experience can teach us that business deals should never be conducted over the phone, through the mail or over the internet. But that can be difficult when you're thousands of miles from the city. The best advice? Set up an appointment with the landlord or potential roommate and send a friend. If they make it difficult by canceling, refusing to take them to the apartment or demanding money right away, stay away. It may even be beneficial to work with a well-researched broker. They may be more expensive, but you'll get what you're looking for.
Don't say, "I'll just put everything in my car."
This is especially true if you've been established on your own for a while. Unless you sell literally everything you own but the bare essentials, when it comes down to it, you'll find either you have more than expected or that your car doesn't have the room you anticipated. Get a trailer, a moving truck, or a very large truck.
Don't forget about your car
If you have a car, or are going to keep your car, remember to research parking around the city. It can be expensive, so try finding a garage outside of Manhattan. The further out you get, the less expensive it will be.

Can you believe it! You're moving to New York! One of the most famous cities in the world, with landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building and the Brooklyn Bridge. There's restaurants of plenty, cultural layers, and Walmart does not rule there. Enjoy yourself! And remember, you're in the greatest city in the world!
