I don't always sort everything, but I at least do darks and lights most of the time, and I save suspiciously bright items to do separately. My secret passion is 20 Mule Team Borax, the one with the cowgirl on the package, holding up a box with the cowgirl on the package holding up the box and so on. It brightens like liquid bleach, but you don't run the risk of inadvertently batiking your jeans. It's surprisingly hard to find around my neck of the woods.

I've ruined a few things over the years, ugh. Each year I tweak my laundry routine so I don't repeat past mistakes lol.

When I've finished with a towel or tea cloth I hang it somewhere to dry first, before I put it in with the other dirty washing. Otherwise the dampness will make everything smell before I get to washing it all. And sometimes colours can run.

I don't do a white wash because I don't have any whites or lights.

When I have new clothing I'll put the items in a separate wash. Previously I've made the mistake of not doing that ...

I use a front loading washing machine and I don't do a towel load any more because that unbalances the machine. I tend to lump everything in together and it all washes nicely. I also use a quarter of the washing powder that's recommended because it soaps up so much. I do use a washing powder recommended for front loaders.

Empty all pockets! Check underpants too!

Make sure you understand how to operate your washing machine and are using the recommended detergent.
Empty the machine soon after it has finished, otherwise it will smell.
Turn the water off after the machine has finished.

Hmmm, can't think of anything else at the moment, lol.

Laundry wash bags are great for keeping bras and other delicates safe. You can also use them for small items like handkerchiefs and socks. I'm not fond of the open weave (mesh) bags because the zip tag catches on the material.
