Amy, good topic. I live in Australia and I use a doona which is similar, but not the same as, an eiderdown, lol. I'm not sure that comforters are sold downunder, I've only heard about them from USA friends.

Our Australian Macquarie Concise Dictionary states:

Doona -- a quilted eiderdown with a down filling (doona is a trademark).

The doona on my bed probably has a synthetic filling, mum currently uses one with real feathers in it. I don't bother with a cover on mine, whereas I've put a cover on mum's because the feathers are escaping, lol.

Eiderdown -- a heavy quilt, properly one filled with eiderdown. (We no longer have the original one that was a wedding gift to my mum and dad way back in 1962, lol. Dark red satin ooooh! And a bedspread to match.)

Duvet -- any of various things stuffed with down, as a kind of quilt. (I haven't used this word in so long I can't remember when I last used it to describe something.)
